A Cruise Too Far

Island, I said we had 2.9 m under us now going passed !

This was the flat calm at the top of the tide 14:30hrs 3m under PennCirrus

Thursday 1st August 2013 I had checked this Chart of Morwellham below!

I had checked this Chart of Morwellham

Just after Morwellham Dock was approaching the Island, we had a Drascumbe Lugger go to the left of us and we were in the middle of the water I said we had 2.9 m under us now going passed the Island and then with a lurch the dinghy caught us up with a bump? we were aground!

I've just found this view from Google Maps, pity I didn't print it out first!

The engine could swing us around but not clear of the obstruction even with leaning the boat. We were facing the shore where 15ft away was some tree stumps,  thinking these were part of the obstacle . First got Graham to tie a line 30ft to a tree trunk on the Island even with riding turns on the jib winch we wound the line bar taught on the stern no movement. Next I tried to push of on the bow, with the oar from the dinghy, but couldn't touch the ground!? Here I took every thing out of my jeans pockets and went over the side, luckily it was not a self inflating life Jacket, surprise the bow was in deep water! Going round the back I found it was against a rock? I rowed the dinghy with a line to the trees on the Morwellham side, put a line around one trunk and took the other end back to PennCirrus.

Told Graham I hoped to go out towards the trees, right turn and back the way we came, It worked, the winch took the strain we moved forward I used the engine to turn and then Graham let go of one end of the line pulled the other in. It felt like the rope was touching the prop so put it out of gear we were still moving forward and graham got the last of the rope in, I motored on, now we were back at Morwellham quay and Going Back in Familiar waters!

Now I have the task to check out the boat to see if there is any damage to the glass fiber was done by running aground or getting off the obstruction. I'll have to beach it this Tuesday morning, by using the legs for the first time for real.

06:30 hw Beached 07:35 started pressure washing and cleaned off the hull. On inspection we scraped off the gelsheild 2000 and were down to the original gelcoat. So only work required now was a quick coat of antifouling the rest will be done after lift out. That evening the Boat was much quicker and we won Tuesday Night Race on 6th Aug 13. The legs were very good but needed slack water to fit them.
